Thrace

Thrace
   Region defined by the Aegean Sea and Sea of Marmara (qq.v.) to the south, the Black Sea (q.v.) to the east, the Balkan range to the north, and the Nestos River to the west. The plain of Thrace was of great strategic importance, not only for its fertility (e.g., its production of corn) but because through it ran the great east-west highway, the Via Egnatia (q.v.), as well as the highway from Constantinople to Belgrade (qq.v.), which provided access to the north. The region suffered from repeated invasions, including that of the Visigoths (q.v.), who defeated Valens at the battle of Adrianople (qq.v.) in 378.
